I’m Not From Here — And That May Be My Greatest Strength

One of the things I hear most often as a real estate agent on Maryland’s Eastern Shore is some version of:
“You’re not originally from here, are you?”
And the answer is no.
I did not grow up on the Eastern Shore. I was not born into generations of local family history. I did not spend summers crabbing on the river as a child or attend school with people whose families have lived here for decades.
But I chose this place.
And I think there is something powerful about that.
When you choose a place, you see it differently.
You notice the beauty in the quiet roads lined with trees. You appreciate the charm of the historic homes, the waterfront sunsets, the slower pace, the sense of community, and the feeling that life here still has room to breathe.
People who have lived here forever sometimes forget how special that is.
I do not.
Coming from California gave me a different perspective. I have seen crowded markets, fast-paced lifestyles, and communities where people are constantly searching for more space, more peace, and more connection.
That is exactly what so many people are looking for when they come to the Eastern Shore.
They are looking for waterfront living, historic homes, acreage, small-town charm, and a lifestyle that feels more meaningful.
As someone who made that transition myself, I understand what it feels like to leave one place behind and build a life somewhere new.
I know what questions buyers have when they are considering a move here.
What is the difference between the counties? What should they know about septic systems, wells, flood zones, or shoreline regulations? What is it really like to live here year-round? Which towns are best for boating, historic homes, or privacy?
These are the questions I help answer every day.
Being “from somewhere else” has also made me work harder.
I know I have to earn trust.
I know I have to prove myself.
That means I show up differently.
I invest in high-quality marketing. I spend time understanding the details of waterfront and historic properties. I focus on telling the story behind each home because buyers are not just purchasing property here — they are buying into a lifestyle.
Whether it is a historic home, a luxury waterfront estate, or a cottage near the water, every home has a story, and every client deserves someone who will work hard to tell it well.
I may not be from here originally.
But I believe deeply in this place.
I believe in the beauty of the Eastern Shore. I believe in its history, its communities, and the lifestyle it offers.
And perhaps most importantly, I know what it feels like to fall in love with it.
That is a story worth sharing.
There is also value in seeing the Eastern Shore through fresh eyes.
When you have lived somewhere your entire life, it is easy to overlook the things that make it extraordinary. The quiet pace. The sense of community. The beauty of a waterfront sunset. The architecture of a historic home. The fact that people still wave to one another and know their neighbors.
For many buyers, these are not small things. They are exactly the reasons they are searching for a new place to call home.
I understand that because I have experienced it myself.
I know what it feels like to arrive somewhere new and immediately recognize that it offers something special.
That is why I do not just sell homes here. I help people understand what it means to live here
.
Whether someone is relocating from another state, looking for more space, searching for a waterfront property, or hoping to find a historic home with character and charm, my goal is always the same: to help them see what makes this area so unique.
Because sometimes it takes someone from the outside to remind people just how remarkable a place really is.
